About me (one and a half years later...)

Who I am

My name is Isabelle Joubert (hopefully you know that already) and I am 14 and a bit years old. I am in grade nine and have exams at the end of this term :P.

Ten facts about me

1. I still knit (a lot). I recently made a monster thing of my own invention that I'll post photos of.

2. I prefer cats to dogs and I am trying to convince my parents to get me a cat (which will either be called Sherlock or Spock, regardless of gender). Now that I think about it, the fact that I would call a female cat Spock is probably one of the reasons my parents won't get me one...

3. I belong to multiple fandoms including Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes (books included), Star Trek (well duh), The Hunger Games, Divergent etc. A large ammount of my time goes into maintaining these fandoms which icludes annoying my family with random bits of trivia about all of them but you never know when it will come in handy!

4. I read constantly and I always read the book before watching the movie (ALWAYS). I think my favourite book is either How I Live Now (Meg Rosoff) or The Perks of being a Wallflower (Stephen Chbosky) but any booknerd will tell you that you can tell someone doesn't read if they ask you what your favourite book is ;) (It is like choosing between siblings!)

5. I can't decide what my favourite band is but I really like Arctic Monkeys, Florence and the Machine, Nirvana, The Beatles, The Lumineers, Cage the Elephant etc. (Again, it is impossible to choose.)

6. Buying me a book voucher means we will be friends forever. Also if you belong to the same fandom as me means we will be friends forever.

7. I recently cut my hair and it means that I get to wear my hair down to school when everyone else has to tie it back :D.

8. If I don't have to go out I will wear pajamas and slippers, no negotiations.

9. I don't like parties that much and I don't like shopping (Unless it's book shopping. Sometimes I don't even buy the books, I just stare at them longingly).

10. I really want The Hobbit: There and Back Again to come out. That and Mockingjay Part 1. And The Fault in our Stars. I'm waiting for a lot of things to come out.

The Star Trek infatuation continues...

Hi,

My Star Trek infatuation is ever growing and due to this fact here is the project I had for most of the Christmas holiday. Making Star Trek dolls.

Since this is based on another pattern I won't be posting how to make them but here are some pictures of the bridge crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise :)

Captain James Kirk

First Officer (S'chn T'gai) Spock

Doctor Leonard Mccoy

Lieutenant Montgomery "Scotty" Scott

Lieutenant Nyota Uhura

Ensign Pavel Chekov

I haven't gotten round to making Sulu yet but I will soon.

As well as watching Star Trek I've added Sherlock to the short list of TV shows I watch and ERMAHGERD it's amazing. Even My dad likes it :).

I have finished reading Lord of the Rings *cries* and am almost finished the movies. I am also reading Sherlock Holmes which is remarkable, I can see why people were so obsessed with it (well they actually still are but ANYway).

Some books I reccomend which I read this holiday are:

On the Road - Jack Kerouac (this has been added to my list of favourite books ever!)
All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque
An Abundance of Katherines - John Green
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society -  Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer

The phenomenon of internet fame and its (ab)users

Hi internet,

*Serious post from here*

Having recently heard about the Tom Milsom assault case, I thought I'd do a post about the internet users and abusers and the phenomenon of internet fame.

Anyone who's ever been on tumblr/instagram/youtube/the internet in general, will know the famous vloggers/bloggers:
Vlogbrothers (the overlords ;) )
Danisnotonfire  and AmazingPhil
Tyler Oakley
Marcus Butler
Caspar Lee
Zoella
Alfie Deyes
Louise Watson etc.
(if you haven't heard of them, uhh where have you been hiding?).

There are also the lesser known (but getting up there) vloggers/bloggers like:
Tom Milsom
Will Darbyshire
Bertie Gilbert etc.

These people have achieved the status of internet fame. To their followers they are celebrities. They are funny, relateable, seemingly intelligent people. The only problem is that we, as their followers, attach a certain persona to all of them. As a result of them sharing a lot of their life with us, we feel as though we know them. The truth is, we really don't. This is one of the many reasons cases such as Tom Milsom's and Alex Day's have happened. We are delluded about who these people are because of how they present themselves. I was a fan of Tom's music and he seemed like a funny, quirky guy.

The said vloggers/bloggers are the ones in control of how much we know or don't know about them. They can choose whether to show or hide many aspects of their lives. We do not actually know them.

That is not to say that all the people listed are necessarily like Milsom and Day. Vlogbrothers (a.k.a. the Green brothers) deal with relevant subjects for teenagers that are otherwise not discussed, as well as the media, history, books etc. The other people listed are funny and entertaining and also deal with more serious subjects that are not always dealt with. Bloggers like Scarlett Curtis do the same.

A lot of the issues of internet fame abuse are coming up on tumblr, and in the same way that we do not know youtubers, we do not know which confessions are verifiable. While Milsom's and Day's have been verified, there was a story going around about Tyler Oakley, which was an entirely different situation adapted into a story involving Tyler being at Vidcon. There have been similar accusations directed at Danisnotnonfire and AmazingPhil. These stories were discussed and disproved by Hank Green on his tumblr.

Ultimately, do not trust everything you see on the internet, and don't assume you know who the people behind the screens are.

*End of seriousness*

So after months of hiding in my bedroom reading I am BACK :D. If this post was of value to you or you would like me to do a couple more like it please leave a comment or email me at izznknit@gmail.com :).
