The phenomenon of internet fame and its (ab)users

Hi internet,

*Serious post from here*

Having recently heard about the Tom Milsom assault case, I thought I'd do a post about the internet users and abusers and the phenomenon of internet fame.

Anyone who's ever been on tumblr/instagram/youtube/the internet in general, will know the famous vloggers/bloggers:
Vlogbrothers (the overlords ;) )
Danisnotonfire  and AmazingPhil
Tyler Oakley
Marcus Butler
Caspar Lee
Zoella
Alfie Deyes
Louise Watson etc.
(if you haven't heard of them, uhh where have you been hiding?).

There are also the lesser known (but getting up there) vloggers/bloggers like:
Tom Milsom
Will Darbyshire
Bertie Gilbert etc.

These people have achieved the status of internet fame. To their followers they are celebrities. They are funny, relateable, seemingly intelligent people. The only problem is that we, as their followers, attach a certain persona to all of them. As a result of them sharing a lot of their life with us, we feel as though we know them. The truth is, we really don't. This is one of the many reasons cases such as Tom Milsom's and Alex Day's have happened. We are delluded about who these people are because of how they present themselves. I was a fan of Tom's music and he seemed like a funny, quirky guy.

The said vloggers/bloggers are the ones in control of how much we know or don't know about them. They can choose whether to show or hide many aspects of their lives. We do not actually know them.

That is not to say that all the people listed are necessarily like Milsom and Day. Vlogbrothers (a.k.a. the Green brothers) deal with relevant subjects for teenagers that are otherwise not discussed, as well as the media, history, books etc. The other people listed are funny and entertaining and also deal with more serious subjects that are not always dealt with. Bloggers like Scarlett Curtis do the same.

A lot of the issues of internet fame abuse are coming up on tumblr, and in the same way that we do not know youtubers, we do not know which confessions are verifiable. While Milsom's and Day's have been verified, there was a story going around about Tyler Oakley, which was an entirely different situation adapted into a story involving Tyler being at Vidcon. There have been similar accusations directed at Danisnotnonfire and AmazingPhil. These stories were discussed and disproved by Hank Green on his tumblr.

Ultimately, do not trust everything you see on the internet, and don't assume you know who the people behind the screens are.

*End of seriousness*

So after months of hiding in my bedroom reading I am BACK :D. If this post was of value to you or you would like me to do a couple more like it please leave a comment or email me at izznknit@gmail.com :).
